The novel written by Aldona Grupas “It’s not easy to be an angel” tells about the way of the nurse from Palanga, who works in England for nursing home since 2005. The first part of the novel is devoted for the life of the main heroine before 2005 year, when she receives her experience. Her way begins from the work in Palanga, Lithuanian resort town, dated the end of 80s. After her dismissal the heroin visits courses of non-contact massage and discovers, that she has a talent to reveal people’s illnesses and treat them by feeling their energy through the hands. After two boys were cured from food allergy, the main heroin receives invitation to Germany from their mother. There she continues the practice and, travelling around the world, helps the people. Meanwhile she studies spiritual practice of Reiki.
The second part tells us about the work of the main heroin for the English nursing home. It contains useful recommendations, what to do, if you must care for sick people. It tells us, how is important not to forget about ourselves, to receive help from other people, to see positive sides and to find the time for pleasant things. Also it tells us how to feed, to dress and to wash sick people, how to avoid bedsores. But it is not less important for sick people to be heard and understood, to feel the involvement. For example, the author shows us some patients of the nursing home – the people with their own joys and sorrows, their experiences and memories about the past time, their interests and hobbies. The people who have their secrets and tells her, because do not want do died with it. The people who afflict by dementia and hardly can understand something. The people who stand at death and need for the last consolation.
Now I want to notice the strong and weak sides of the novel. Which moments pleased me?
Firstly, in spite of the serious and hard theme, the language is easy, and a reader could understand it without any difficulties, even he or she does not know any medical terms. Also, despite in the novel is spoken about illnesses and death, reading in does not call sadness or depression.
Secondly, the image of the main heroin calls sympathy. The text gives impression, that she is a positive, cheerful and at the same time a kind woman with a responsive soul. We could see, that the patients of the nursing house are not perceive by the main heroine as faceless units, but as valuable people. And to help them is a genuine pleasure for her.
Considered, that the beginning and the end of the novel are the most important parts. What can I say about them?
The novel begins from a small funny scene. However, this scene determines further style of the narrative – easy and positive.
In the end of the novel the heroin meets with a little girl in the church and considers it as a salute from her died patient. This scene leaves a reader with the hope, that after the death life in not finished.
Now some words about weaknesses.
First of all, in the novel there is too much divisions of subtitles, withal the content of each next subtitle continues the content of each past. In my own opinion, to some extent, it breaks the wholeness of the text.
The second moment are the names. In contrast to the second part, where some heroes named, in the first almost nobody have their own names. Because of it, people, with whom meets the mail heroin, in some ways seems to be faceless.
And finally, in literary works it is better to write numerals as the words than as the numbers.
But in spite of several small defects, the whole impression from the novel is positive. I would recommend to real it, especially to the people, who take care for their sick relatives.
Роман Алдоны Групас «Нелегко быть ангелом» повествует о жизни медсестры из Паланги, с 2005 года работающей в Англии в доме престарелых. Первая часть посвящена становлению главной героини, приобретению опыта. Начинается её путь с работы в курортном городе Паланги в конце 80-х. После увольнения героиня посещает курсы бесконтактного массажа, обнаруживает у себя дар выявлять болезни людей и лечить их, чувствуя руками их энергию. Вылечив от пищевой аллергии двух мальчиков, она получает от их матери приглашению в Германию, где продолжает свою практику, а также путешествует по всему миру, помогая людям. Параллельно она осваивает духовные практики Рейки.
Вторая часть повествует непосредственно о работе главной героини в английском доме престарелых. В ней содержатся полезные советы о том, как быть тем, кому приходится иметь дело с тяжелобольными. О том, как важно, ухаживая за больным родственником, не забывать о себе, уметь принимать помощь от тех, кто готов помочь, видеть положительные моменты и находить время заниматься делами, которые доставляют удовольствие и способствуют здоровью. О том, как правильно больных кормить, одевать, мыть, как не допустить пролежней. Однако не менее важно для больного общение и живое участие, готовность выслушать. Также автор приводит в качестве примера биографии некоторых пациентов дома престарелых – людей со своими радостями и горестями, со своим жизненным опытом и памятью о прошлом, со своими интересами и увлечениями. Людей, которые имеют тайну и, не желая уносить её в могилу, доверяют ей. Людей, которые, вследствие деменции, мало что понимают, людей, которые находятся при смерти и нуждаются в последнем утешении.
Теперь о сильных и слабых сторонах романа. Что понравилось?
Во-первых, несмотря на довольно-таки серьёзную и тяжёлую тему, язык повествования лёгкий и доходчивый, без каких-либо заумных медицинских терминов, понятных не каждому читателю, и, хотя речь идёт о болезнях и смерти, чтение не наводит тоску или депрессию.
Во-вторых, понравился образ самой главной героини. Написанное создаёт о ней впечатление как о человеке позитивном и в то же время добром, душевным, способным к сопереживанию. Видно, что пациенты дома престарелых для неё не какие-то безликие единицы – каждый представляет для неё ценность как человек. И, по всему видно, помогать людям доставляет ей искреннее удовольствие.
Говорят, особенно важно для романа начало и концовка. Что я могу сказать о них?
Начинается роман с незначительного, забавного эпизода. Однако именно он определяет дальнейший настрой повествования – лёгкий и позитивный.
Заканчивается роман встречей с маленькой девочкой в церкви, которую главная героиня восприняла как привет с того света от умершей пациентки. Этот финальный эпизод оставляет читателю надежду на то, что смерть для жизни не конец.
Теперь несколько слов о слабых сторонах.
Прежде всего, роман изобилует делением глав на многочисленные подзаголовки, притом, что содержание следующего подзаголовка является прямым продолжением мысли, озвученной в предыдущем, что, на мой взгляд, несколько скрадывает целостность текста.
Второй момент – это имена. Если во второй части некоторые персонажи названы по именам, то в первой имён почти не указывается, отчего люди, с которыми приходится сталкиваться главной героине, выглядят несколько обезличенными.
И, наконец, числительные – в художественной литературе их всё же лучше писать словами, а не цифрами.
Однако несмотря на небольшие недочёты, в целом роман произвёл на меня положительное впечатление. Я бы рекомендовала его прочитать, особенно тем, кто ухаживает за больными родственниками.
